Chemistry


Chemistry is the study of what things are made of and why they behave the way they do, at a level of precision most people never think about after high school lab. It's also one of the most direct paths into a research career, because the lab work starts early and it's real.


What Students Actually Do

Chemistry majors build a foundation in general, organic, and physical chemistry, then specialize into areas like biochemistry, materials science, analytical chemistry, or environmental chemistry. Lab work isn't an occasional add-on. It's a weekly, sometimes daily, part of the major from sophomore year on, and most programs expect students to get into an actual research lab, working on a professor's project, well before senior year. The coursework is demanding and cumulative. Falling behind in organic chemistry makes everything after it harder, which means the major rewards students who stay consistent rather than cram.


Why It's Worth a Closer Look

Chemistry sits underneath an unusually wide range of careers: pharmaceuticals, materials science, environmental science, forensics, food science, energy research, and of course medicine, for students on a pre-med track. Graduates go into industry labs, PhD programs, and med school in roughly equal measure, which means the major keeps real options open rather than committing a student to one narrow path. If your student is the one who actually wants to know why the reaction works, not just that it does, this major will keep them satisfied.


Where to Find It

MIT, Caltech, Berkeley, and Illinois lead in research output, but a smaller school with real undergraduate lab access can matter more than a famous name here. Look at Harvey Mudd, Reed, Carleton, and Case Western for programs where undergrads run their own experiments early instead of washing glassware for two years. The deciding factor isn't the department's prestige. It's whether first- and second-years actually get into a working lab.


Why This Matters Now

Drug development, clean energy, materials for batteries and semiconductors, the shift toward sustainable manufacturing: all of it runs through chemistry. The demand for people who understand matter at this level isn't slowing down.
