If you are fascinated by living things, enjoy science and math, and like the idea of learning through experiments and hands-on investigation, biology may be a major worth exploring.

Biology is the study of life—from cells and genes to plants, animals, humans, and entire ecosystems. Because the field is so broad, biology majors can pursue a wide range of academic specialties and career paths.


What Will You Study as a Biology Major?


Most biology programs combine classroom learning with laboratory work. During the first two years of college, students typically build a foundation in biology, chemistry, and mathematics, often including calculus or statistics.

Introductory courses may cover subjects such as:

  • Cell and molecular biology

  • Genetics

  • Ecology

  • Evolution

  • Biochemistry

  • Human anatomy and physiology

  • Microbiology

  • Biostatistics


As students move into more advanced coursework, they can often specialize in an area that matches their interests. Depending on the college, concentrations might include molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, ecology, neuroscience, or human biology.


One important thing for prospective students to understand: biology isn't just about memorizing scientific terminology. There is often a significant hands-on and analytical component to the major.


Students may design experiments, conduct laboratory or field research, collect and analyze data, work collaboratively with classmates, and present their findings. Along the way, they develop skills in scientific reasoning, problem-solving, communication, careful observation, and quantitative analysis.


Is Biology Only for Future Doctors?


Definitely not.


Biology is a popular choice for students considering medical school because many biology courses overlap with medical-school prerequisites. But you do not have to major in biology to attend medical school, and becoming a doctor is only one of many directions a biology graduate can pursue.


Students interested in healthcare might eventually pursue careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, physician assistant studies, physical or occupational therapy, public health, or other health professions. Many of these careers require additional graduate or professional education.


Biology majors interested in research may continue to master's or doctoral programs and specialize in fields such as genetics, epidemiology, ecology, neuroscience, microbiology, or molecular biology. Students interested in becoming university professors or leading independent scientific research generally need a Ph.D.


Careers Beyond Medicine


Biology can also lead to careers that students may not initially associate with the major.

Students who enjoy laboratory work might become biological or laboratory technicians, assisting scientists with experiments and research in universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, government laboratories, and other research organizations.


Students interested in biotechnology might work on the development of new medicines, diagnostic tools, agricultural products, food technologies, or other applications of biological science.


Those interested in the environment may pursue work in conservation, ecology, wildlife biology, environmental science, forestry, or natural-resource management. Opportunities may exist with government agencies, research organizations, parks, zoos, environmental consulting firms, and nonprofit organizations.


Biology majors with strong communication skills can also move into areas such as science writing, journalism, public health education, scientific communications, or policy.

Teaching is another possibility. Students interested in becoming middle- or high-school biology teachers will generally need to complete their state's teacher-certification requirements in addition to their biology coursework.


Biology can even intersect with law. Students may eventually pursue areas such as environmental law, health law, biotechnology and intellectual-property law, or medical malpractice, although becoming an attorney requires completing law school after college.


What Should You Look for in a College Biology Program?


If biology is on your list of possible majors, don't look only at whether a college offers a biology degree. Dig deeper.


Consider questions such as:

  • How early can undergraduates participate in research?

  • Are professors actively involving students in their labs?

  • What biology concentrations or specialized tracks are available?

  • Are there opportunities for fieldwork, internships, or independent research?

  • Does the college have strong facilities and laboratory resources?

  • Are there connections with hospitals, biotechnology companies, environmental organizations, or research institutes?

  • Can students easily combine biology with another interest, such as data science, psychology, environmental studies, business, or public health?


For a student considering a health profession, it is also worth investigating the college's pre-health advising, rather than assuming that a school with a well-known biology department automatically provides strong support for pre-med students.


Could Biology Be Right for You?


Biology may be a good fit if you:

  • Are curious about how living systems work

  • Enjoy laboratory experiments and scientific investigation

  • Are comfortable with both science and quantitative coursework

  • Like analyzing evidence and solving problems

  • Are willing to work carefully and precisely

  • Enjoy collaborative research as well as independent work

  • Want a major that can lead to many different scientific, healthcare, environmental, educational, or research careers


The breadth of biology is one of its biggest advantages. A student interested in genetics may have a very different college experience—and ultimately a very different career—from a student fascinated by ecosystems, human physiology, biotechnology, or infectious disease.


For students who genuinely enjoy asking “How does this work?” about the living world, biology can provide an unusually wide range of ways to keep exploring that question.
